The Story
A unique bronze chair inspired by ocean swells and “Gaudiesque” reflections on nature. Sculpted by the artist and masterfully cast in the Cox London foundry, the highly polished ripples of bronze evoke movement, time and experience.
The original upholstery was inspired by 19th century “navigation charts” from regions of Oceania and in particular the extraordinary “stick charts” of the Marshall Islands. The charts are not maps as such but devices to represent patterns in the ocean swell, vital reference points for early indigenous voyagers.
Subsequent editions have unique embroidery or customer’s own choice of fabric (COM).

“Ocean swells and shifting sands inspired the Chair’s form and surfaces. Gaudiesque reflections on nature”
NICOLA COX
Conceived and sculpted by the artist in plaster over an iron armature and masterfully cast in the Cox London foundry, the highly polished ripples of bronze evoke movement, time and experience.
The upholstery, which varies on each edition of chairs, is hand-embroidered by Cox and her artisans. This unique edition is upholstered in silk, intricately hand-embroidered with seaweed imagery. The inspiration came from seaweed, gathered on the Jurassic coast where the couple have a home, which was pressed and preserved in their London studio. Careful reference is made to over 30 colours prevalent in the pressings.
In 2022, a pair of Voyager Chairs was purchased by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and displayed at Chatsworth House in an exhibition called "Living With Art We Love 2022. The unique exhibition showcased a selection of the couple’s favourite art pieces, including both contemporary and historic works.
